Scholarship Host

The Gates Cambridge Scholarship is hosted by the University of Cambridge and is funded by a donation from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Eligibility Criteria

(i) Open to applicants from any country outside the United Kingdom.

(ii) Must be applying for a postgraduate degree at the University of Cambridge in one of the following categories:

(a)PhD (full-time or part-time)

(b) MLitt (full-time)

(c) One-year postgraduate course (full-time), with some exceptions.

(iii) Applicants must demonstrate outstanding intellectual ability, a commitment to improving the lives of others, leadership potential, and a strong rationale for their chosen course.

Benefits

(i) The Gates Cambridge Scholarship covers the full cost of studying at the University of Cambridge, including:

(a) University Composition Fee.

(b) Maintenance allowance (£20,000 for 12 months in 2023-24, with support for up to 4 years for PhD students).

(c) One economy airfare at the beginning and end of the course.

(d) Visa costs and Immigration Health Surcharge.

(ii) Additionally, the scholarship offers discretionary funding for:

(a) Academic development, ranging from £500 to £2,000.

(b) Dependent children allowance.

(c) Maintenance allowance during fieldwork.

(d) Maternity/Paternity funding for up to 6 months.

(e) Hardship funding for unforeseen circumstances.

Scholarship Deadline

Applications for the 2025-26 academic year will open in September 2024. The scholarship has two selection rounds each year, with specific deadlines provided during the application process.
